P.C.: The local Italy

Ah, calories!! Isn’t it another annoyance tossed up to increase the stress of our already busy modern lives? And now associate it with most people’s much-loved drink – coffee, another door to extra anxiety, unlocked.

Simply put, calories are the amount of energy present in the food and drinks we consume. Our body requires energy to function throughout the day. However, extra calories can result in the storage of fat. Hence, the reason why calories are seen in a poor light.

Regular black coffee has practically no calories. So, you must be pondering, then what is all this fuss about? The concern is not the coffee itself, which is a known healthy beverage, but the calories present in add-ons, which eventually mounts up the calorie count in various coffee drinks.

Black coffee

One cup of black coffee contains almost no calories or if you want to put a figure to it, be ready for a shocker – 1-2 calories. What a buzzkill for coffee haters!! Although the additions such as creamer, syrup or sugar can increase the calorie count of the drink.

Let’s find out how many calories are actually present in these additional ingredients.

Calories in Milk

Whole milk (100 ml) – 68 calories

Semi-skimmed milk (100 ml) – 47 calories

Skimmed milk (100 ml) – 35 calories

Calories in sugar

1 teaspoon of sugar – 16 calories

1 packet of sugar (2 tbsp) – 23 calories

1 cube – 9-15 calories

So, if you fancy a latte or a Frappuccino, these additions skyrocket your daily calorie count.

Experts from across the world came up with quantifiable data to determine the number of calories in some of the most common coffee drinks.

  • Latte (16 ounces/473 ml) – 190 calories
  • Cappuccino (8 ounces/ 236 ml) – 80 calories
  • Americano (Splash of milk and 1 tbsp sugar) – 34 calories
  • Macchiato (2 ounces/ 60 ml) – 13 calories
  • Caramel Macchiato (8 ounces/ 236 ml) – 140-190 calories

When consumed extra, these drinks can contribute significantly to raising your daily calorie count. According to NHS, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men.

Therefore, if you are watching your diet, it is highly advised that you reduce or entirely cut off the consumption of these fancy coffee drinks loaded with extra calories.

With that being said, if you buy blends that are rich and smooth, there is no requirement of adding extra ingredients and hence, no worries of extra calories.
