P.C: Thrillist

If you are a true coffee connoisseur, it is most likely that you have tried Colombian coffee and fallen in love with it repeatedly with every sip. Colombian coffee is renowned across the globe for its delicious taste and quality. Colombia is the world’s 3rd largest producer of coffee. Globally, Colombian coffee accounts for about 12% of the coffee produced.

Appreciating a cup of Colombian coffee properly is very important. The work and effort guarantee the quality of the final product for consumers all over the world. Colombian coffee maintains a standard of high quality that is not easily replicated by any other coffee.

So, what makes Colombian coffee so special?

1) Perfect Geometry

Colombian coffee is known for its rich, mild flavour because of the perfect climate and beans that are grown. Coffee’s a fruit plant and what you brew is the seed.

“This plant called the Coffea originated in Southern Africa and Asia. Humans transplanted it to other regions where it flourished.

The best soil for coffee growth is volcanic. This soil sits at high elevations between 3000 and 6000 feet. But the coffee plant will not survive freezing temperatures thus humans cultivated this plant in tropical mountain ranges.”

Colombian soil is volcanic, but it is frost-free and gets in the range of 80 inches of rain a year. In other words, it has all the soil qualities you would need to brew perfect coffee.

The trade-off for a region filled with volcanic soil in rainy mountains is that getting the coffee beans from its home to the rest of the world calls for quite the trek. But most people will agree that it is worth the trip!

2) Types of the coffee

There are two types of coffee beans in the world: Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica tend to be slightly sweeter with a softer taste but are also more acidic, while Robusta has a stronger taste and is considered the lower-quality bean.

Robusta also contains two times the amount of caffeine as Arabica beans.

Colombia is one of the few countries that only grows Arabica beans, which besides, climate and elevation, is why – Colombian coffee is considered higher quality.

3) Growing and Harvesting method

The other reason for the superior quality of the Columbian coffee can also be attributed to its growing and harvesting methods.

It is not enough that coffee grows in the perfect location because it also requires the proper way of cultivating the trees and harvesting the coffee beans.

In terms of growth, Columbian coffee is usually grown on steep slopes that are surrounded by trees and plants needed for shade. As for the harv-esting method, every bean is said to be hand-picked, known colloquially as “cherry-picking”, which is what makes all the difference.

The farmers harvest the coffee che-rries by hand-picking each cherry. And they only pick the fully ripe ones, which means only the most flavorful cherries are ending up in your cup later.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. Colombia is one of the best places in the world to grow coffee thanks to its location and climate, method of growing and harvesting, as well as the type of coffee bean that it is.
